Captain Atom
Post-Crisis

I'm Captain Atom. I have no wife. I have no children. I'm Captain Atom. I'm a living conduit plugged into the limitless Quantum Field that comprises all matter and energy. That means--there must be no limit--to what I can do! I'm Captain Atom.

But now those universes are falling into my hands, all thanks to your miscalculation. You know, I've got some real heavy hitters saluting my flag. Not one has furthered my cause as much as you. With the fall of this universe... all of the Multiverse remains mine for the taking!

Summary

During the Vietnam War, Nathaniel Christopher Adam served in the United States Air Force. Under the watchful eye of Col. Wade Eiling, he was framed for a crime he didn't commit and condemned to death in 1968. He was offered the option to engage in a military experiment with a slim chance of surviving in exchange for a presidential pardon if he survived. The experiment entailed blasting a huge nuclear bomb beneath the hull of a wrecked extra-terrestrial ship while Adam was inside it to evaluate its resilience. Against all chances, Adam lived, with the alien metal merging with his flesh and the surplus energy propelling him twenty years forward in time.

And then, he became the Quantum-powered hero known as Captain Atom.

Nathaniel found himself out of time in 1986 and back in the hands of Eiling, the man who caused his downfall and took his life, who had now become a general and the second husband of Nathaniel's now-deceased wife. Eiling not only took his life away from him, but also took his family from him. Because everyone assumed Adam died during the experiment, his presidential pardon was never issued, and the current administration refused to honour the previous administration's promise. Taking advantage of the situation, the government used Adam's outstanding murder/treason charges to blackmail him into becoming Captain Atom, a government-controlled superhero. For public use, the government gave him a false origin and assigned him the alias Cameron Scott, an Air Force intelligence operative.

Nathaniel came to dislike being the government's lapdog, and he did everything to free himself and regain his family. Years passed, and he finally managed to get free. He then joined the Justice League but would soon find himself being forced to work for the U.S. government many times over the course of next few years.

While on mission with an off-shoot Justice League team, Nathaniel came across the second man to call himself Monarch. Upon revealing himself, Nathaniel found out that this fiend was none other than him. And from that day, to prevent his darker self from returning, he restricted his powers and himself. However, despite his best efforts, a Monitor came around and forced his darker persona to take over. As Monarch, he became an absolute evil creature who waged war against countless heroes and tried to destroy the multiverse to create a singular reality.

Once his Monarch self was supressed, Nathaniel became Captain Atom once again, trying to fix the damage caused by his other self, and to become an even better person and to prevent more people from dying.

All before, which has enhanced to an extreme degree plus; Quantum Manipulation (Captain Atom's main ability is to manipulate the quantum field.[5][6] Nathaniel Adam is the Quantum Elemental, avatar of a universal force that binds everything together.[7][8][9]), Anti-Magic (His quantum energies and skin is anti-magic.[10][11]), Temperature Manipulation and Fire Manipulation (Can produce quantum heat blasts.[8][12] His body can generate heat which can weld steel doors shut.[13] Can generate enough yet precise heat to blow up a gas main.[14] Sometimes has a fire aura around him.[15]), Transformation and Limited Shapeshifting (As explained here.[1] Can transform between his human and superhero form at will.[16][17] Can transform his outer appearance to look different.[18][19]), Regeneration (High; sometimes when he explode, there is nothing left of him but he always return shortly afterwards. Once stated he was blown to atoms.[20]), Immortality (Type 1 and 8; Nathaniel's soul is intertwined with the Quantum Field, giving him infinite life energy.[21] Type 3 and 4; sometimes when he explodes, he dies, but returns to life shortly afterwards. When shown Johnny Sorrow's face, he was sent to the Quantum Field instead of dying. Johnny Sorrow's face has the main ability to kill anyone who sees it), Self-Sustenance (Type 1, 2 and 3; he doesn't need to breath, eat, or sleep.[22][23][24][25]), Inorganic Physiology (He has a metal shell around him.[1] He has no blood, just energy.[26] He is composed almost entirely of energy, only his skin is made of matter.[27]), Enhanced Senses and Extrasensory Perception (The Quantum Field enhanced Nathaniel's senses.[8] Can follow radiation trails.[28][29] Can feel a surge of quantum energies nearby.[30] Felt a teleportation stream.[31] Can detect energy signatures.[9] Felt when Major Force was nearby.[32]), Radiation Manipulation (Captain Atom can give off an insane amount of radiation.[33] For example, he was responsible for the radiation leak in Blüdhaven.[34] If his skin is breached, it unleashes deadly radiation.[32] In addition, he can change deadly radiation to something less deadly.[28]), Explosion Manipulation (He can explode himself, which can propel him backward and forward in time sometimes.[32][8][28] If he absorbs too much energy or radiation, he explodes like a bomb.[35] And his energies can cause explosions, as shown here and here.[1][36][37][38][39] If his skin is breached, he can cause a powerful explosion of quantum force.[37][14] If his Monarch armor is breached, he causes a quantum explosion.[40][41] Can convert matter into energy to create an explosion.[42] If he ever explodes, he can take away an entire time-space continuum with him.[43][22] For example, he once blew up an entire time-space continuum when his shell was breached by Superboy-Prime.[44]), Statistics Amplification (As shown here.[8] Can enhance his physical stats further with quantum energies.[28] Can increase his power greatly with absorption of various forms of energies and powers, such as quantum energies, radiation, etc.[41]), Statistics Reduction (Drained the energies of Nekron in his own realm and then proceeded to one-shot him after he channelling/absorbing the entire Quantum Realm within himself.[21] Can decrease his power levels at will.), Absorption (Can absorb energy, explosions, electricity, Kryptonite, darkness, dark matter, and radiation.[45][46][12][47][27][48][9][1][32] Can absorb unknown and unstable forms of energy and radiation too.[49][50] Absorbing some of these enhances his power levels.[28] Can absorb the deadly energies of Nekron.[21] Absorbed Plastique's explosive power.[51] Can absorb any kind of energy and radiation, but if he absorbs too much, he ends up travelling through time.[52][53] Sometimes, when he absorbs too much, he "dies" and returns to the quantum field.[54] Can absorb other quantum powered people like himself.[41] Absorbed a few alternate selves of himself, as well as some other heroes.[41] Absorbed Major Force when he was going nuclear.[55][27] Alongside his fellow heroes, he absorbed the plasma universe of Green Lantern Hal Jordan/Parallax and absorbed his power to weaken him greatly.[56]), Conceptual Manipulation (Type 1: Nathaniel is the Avatar of the Quantum Field, which is one of the primal aspects of the cosmos.[7] He is connected to the field very deeply and can manipulate it in numerous ways, such as even creating his own universe in it[21]. The Quantum Field scales to the Emotional Spectrum, which is Type 1 and can affect Type 1 Conceptual people. Fought and beat Nekron by channelling the Field and the life it was connected to. Using his powers at its fullest as the Elemental, he was able to defeat Nekron through a conceptual attack[21]), and Limited Power Nullification (Two quantum field manipulators can cancel out each other's powers.[30]).

Flight and Gravity Manipulation (As explained here.[1] Can shift his energies to pure gravity through the use of "weak force".[57]), Energy Manipulation (Once attacked with energy, he can absorb and change it to something which he can use.[1] "Rerouted" the nuclear power of Firestorm.[58] Can extend his aura to those around him.[59] Can manipulate and change radiated energies of the Atomic Skull at will.[28] Absorbed and shunned away the energies of Nekron into the Quantum Field.[21] Can convert his quantum energy to kinetic energy to increase his speed.[60] And can manipulate the will-based constructs of Green Lanterns.[40] And did this to the energies of an alternate Firestorm.[41] Can shift his energies to pure gravity through the use of "weak force".[57] Can create energy constructs to stand on.[44] Contained Fire who was going nuclear.[61] Can convert matter into energy to create an explosion.[42] Transmuted a powerful energy blast of the Manhunters alongside Firestorm.[62] Temporarily contained Takion inside of an energy field.[9]), Energy Projection (Can project powerful beams of quantum energies from his hand and his entire body.[36][63][64][65][66][67][68][69][39][48] When he went nuclear, he nearly destroyed an entire time-space continuum.[70] Can release omnidirectional explosive energies.[71]), Matter Manipulation and Transmutation (Can easily manipulate objects on an atomic level.[72][14][43] And did this to the shadow creatures of Shadowstorm.[48] Can speed up the reaction inside someone.[73] Can convert matter into energy to create an explosion.[42]), Forcefield Creation (An example of which is shown here.[74] And as shown here.[75] Can create large enough forcefields to cover himself and someone else with him.[54][76][61] Created an energy forcefield to protect them from incoming entropy.[77]), Limited Air Manipulation (Via speed. Can fly fast enough to create sandstorms and air vortexes.[5][78]), Paralysis Inducement (He can change his energy to stun people instead of harming them.[72][79][80]), Time Travel and Time-Space Manipulation (In his fight against Monarch (Hank Hall), they twisted time and space, sending them to the past.[45][8] Can quantum leap to future and the past.[1][54][81] He can go to the past or future at will, however, it takes a toll on his energy levels.[43] When he absorbs a lot of energy, he ends up accidently travelling to the future or the past.[28] When he explodes,[82] he also ends up either in the past or the future.[49][50][55][83][27] Created his own universe with its own time and space.[7]), Spatial Manipulation (Created his own universe with its own time and space.[7] Created a hole through the sky.[75] Twisted the space itself in the Bleed.[40] And did so again to destroy his arena.), Reality Warping (Created his own universe and could change its reality with ease.[7] His fight against his other self, they destroyed reality. Then his other self recreated it and toyed with it as he wished.[84]), Size Manipulation (Became smaller than atoms.[45] Can grow bigger too.[21]), Light Manipulation (As shown here.[85] Green Lanterns light based attacks reflected off him.[40] And can glow.[86]), Life Manipulation (As shown in his battle against Nekron.[21] Created his wife and children in his new reality.[7]), Astral Projection (Can Astral Project at will.[87]), Law Manipulation (Can change the laws of his universe if he wishes to.[7]), Creation (Created his own universe.[7] Created his own version of DC heroes, including The Spectre.[88]), Technology Manipulation (As shown and explained here.[17][89][14][73]), Teleportation (Teleported an exploding warhead elsewhere, right before he teleported into the President's office in the White House.[89] As shown here.[90][91][41]), Portal Creation (As shown here, here, here, and here.[90][75][40][86][92]), BFR (Can send targets to other locations, as well as other dimensions/universes and the Bleed.[93][75][40] Sent Kyle Rayner from the Bleed back to his universe.[94] Can shun the energies of other quantum field manipulators back to the field.[95]), Dimensional Travel (Can freely travel to the Astral Plane at will.[87] When he stopped the Kryptonite Meteorite, he exploded and ended up in the Wildstorm Universe.[96] Can travel anywhere in the DC multiverse, including the Bleed.[91][97][98][99] Travelled from one reality to the Bleed easily.[75] Sent Kyle Rayner from the Bleed back to his universe.[94]), Density Manipulation (As shown here.[14]), Biological Manipulation (As shown here.[14] Turned the Engineer into a human.[43]), Immortality Negation (Type 1; Easily killed Jenny Quantum.[70] Type 8; Killed Shadowstorm.[48]), Regenration Negation (Up to Low-Godly; Killed Shadowstorm who could return from complete physical destruction.[48]), Telepathy and Illusion Creation (As shown here.[100]), Limited Telekinesis (As shown here and here.[40][41]), Limited Vibration Manipulation (Can thunderclap.[54]), Fusionism (Fused with his other, shadow-self.[48]), and Non-Physical Interaction (Can touch the psychic illusions of Maxima.[46] Can touch Fire.[61]. Can interact with and fight Nekron[21]).

Attack Potency: Small Building level (Briefly traded blows with Batman, who scales to this.[2]) | Varies (Can control the output of his power at will, as shown here for example.[5][106][109][95] And has been confirmed explicitly in a handbook. Can increase it and reduce it depending on who he is battling, for example, he can reduce it to the point where normal humans won't die from impact with his fist. In addition, his power levels also depend on how much energy he absorbs from the Quantum Field.[8][16] His mental and emotional state also plays a role in his power levels, for example, when he fought Ultraa and got angry, his power grew immensely but when he realised the mistake he made, his power levels went down greatly.[46] Due to the nature of his character, he almost always holds back and lowers down his power levels. See Note 2 for more information.) up to Large Star level in restricted state (Comparable to his durability. Comparable to Superman. Just a few months into his career, he fought Firestorm - twice - and were almost equal to one another.[58][110] In his early days, he fought Green Lantern - albeit the latter had limited power in his ring.[63][5] Briefly took on a small group of Justice League.[72] Fought robot versions of JL - created by a villain - on Dead World.[81] Tackled Starro controlled Power Girl and Flash.[111] In a weakened and confused state, he overpowered Mr. Majestic who had fought Superman Blue in the past.[112] Fought Ultraa, who should be comparable to Maxima.[46] Fought Monarch (Hank Hall) who could overpower the likes of Superman, Guy Gardner, Martian Manhunter, Mon-El, Waverider, and more.[45][8] Considered one of the most powerful heroes on Earth.[53] In Armageddon event, he was hinted at being the most powerful of Earth's heroes.[45] Fought against the Klystar alongside Superman.[113] Consistently fights Major Force and overpowers him.[114][115][116] Momentarily restrained Dark Matter infused Takion.[9] Provided one-fourth of the energy needed to increase the size of a Boom Tube.[117]), High Multiverse level when unrestricted (Casually created his own universe in the Quantum Field with its own set of laws, reality, and time.[7] When their family dog was killed, he destroyed and recreated the universe so their dog could exist once again.[88] Destroyed the universe and recreated it just so he could be the first astronaut on the moon.[88] When his family was falling apart, he destroyed and recreated the universe so it wasn't the case.[88] Created his own version of DC heroes, including The Spectre.[88] And destroyed it as easily once he lost control to his other self.[84] Fought and overpowered his shadow-self who could also create and destroy reality with ease and was comparable to Nathaniel in every way.[84] When he went nuclear, he killed Jenny Quantum without meaning to.[70] Waverider believed Captain Atom was potentially the most powerful man alive.[45] Supplied Metron's chair with enough power and energy to collapse an entire space-time continuum on its own.[117] When the Void sliver messed with his powers, he was going nuclear, the explosion which would have destroyed millions of universes.[118]In his battle against Superman-Prime as the ruthless villain known as Monarch, he accidently destroyed an entire time-space continuum when his suit was breached. Fought Superman-Prime, who is stronger than Post-Crisis and Pre-Crisis Superman.[44] In addition, he wanted to create a chain reaction that will reduce the multiverse into one unified universe.[98]), Ascendent level via Absorption (When channelling the entire Quantum Realm, he fought against Nekron in his own realm[21])

Speed: At least Supersonic+ combat and reaction speed (Briefly traded blows with Batman, who scales to Mach 2.13.[2]) | Likely Speed of Light flight speed (At his early days, he said he could reach half of light speed.[60] Later stated he can reach light speed. Intercepted the Black Racer - albeit he was not moving as fast as he always did.[119] Easily caught up to Firestorm.[120] Can keep up with casual Flash, Wonder Woman, and Power Girl.[121][80][122] Can catch up to confused Takion.[9]). Massively FTL+ to Immeasurable combat and reaction speed (Comparable to and can keep up with the likes of Green Lantern, Superman, Superboy-Prime, Maxima, Firestorm, and more), Irrelevant via Absorption

Lifting Strength: Unknown | At least Class G in restricted state (Overpowered Superman's grip, who was being controlled by The Macrolats. Superman's abilities were likely enhanced during this story arc similarly to Nuklon.[123]), up to Infinite in unrestricted state (Comparable to Superman-Prime,[44] who should be superior to Post-Crisis and Pre-Crisis Superman), Irrelevant via Absorption

Durability: Small Building level (Briefly traded blows with Batman.[2]) | Varies up to Large Star level in restricted state (Comparable to his Attack Potency. A brainwashed and bloodlusted Power Girl failed to hurt him, despite Cap not wanting to fight back and talk to her.[124][24] Whilst weaker, she scales to Superman. In his early days, he fought Green Lantern.[63][5] Got hit by Wonder Woman but was not hurt.[107] Wonder Woman, while weaker, scales to Superman. Tanked attacks from Apollo who could hurt Kyle Rayner.[73] Survived a tackle from Orion and Darkseid.[125] Fought Ultraa, who should be comparable to Maxima.[46] Can tank attacks from Major Force.[114][115][116] Tanked an attack from a new and confused Takion.[9] Survived a hit from Nuklan whose abilities were enhanced by the Macrolats to point where they knocked out Dr Fate alongside Superman and could tank a blast from Captain Atom and the Justice League.[123]), up to High Multiverse level in unrestricted state (Fought Superman-Prime, who is superior to Post-Crisis and Pre-Crisis Superman.[92] Fought his shadow-self who could also create and destroy reality with ease and was comparable to Nathaniel in every way.[84]), Ascendent level via Absorption (When channelling the entire Quantum Realm, he fought against Nekron in his own realm[21])

Stamina: Unknown | Limitless. He is very closely connected to the Quantum Field, so he can draw upon its infinite energies.

Range: Standard melee range, higher with firearms | Standard melee range for physical attacks, up to high multiversal with energy attacks and quantum manipulation, far higher with portals, teleportation and BFR (Sent people to the Bleed), Ascendental via Absorption

Standard Equipment: "Captain Atom" armor | Monarch armor

Intelligence: Nathaniel was a capable soldier, air force officer, and then later an intelligence officer and then a major. Using his power efficiently requires a certain understanding of the quantum field, as well as matter and energy.[109] Has great battle experience, as well as leadership and strategic experience. Captain Atom travelled across the multiverse and gained a greater understanding of the universe/multiverse.[94] As Monarch, he was easily able to deduce the plan of a Monitor, who wanted to be the sole winner of this expansive war.[126] In addition, he entered a long war with the Monitors and created an army of superhumans to follow his every command.[92] An adept leader of both the JLI, Extreme Justice, and a large team of heroes during the Invasion storyline,[127] as well as a multiversal army of supervillains.[98]

Weakness: None notable. | If the laws of nature are tampered with, his powers weaken.[8] His eyes aren't as durable as the rest of his body.[74] If his skin is breached, he can cause a powerful explosion of quantum force.[37] Two quantum field manipulators can cancel out each other's powers.[30] Often, he tries to hold back his power levels due to potential God Complex and fears he is losing his humanity.[128][82] X-Ionized weapons can cut his skin.[37] If Captain Atom absorbs too much energy at once, he will be sent hurtling through time. Depending on the type of energy absorbed, he either goes forward or backwards. Sometimes after he goes nuclear, it takes up to 24 hours for his powers to return.[50] Captain Atom also fears turning into his dark side known as Monarch.[129][72] As Monarch, he was very ruthless and overconfident. His Monarch armor is not as sturdy as his Captain Atom shell. If his Armor gets breached, it can accidentally release enough energy to destroy an entire Universal space-time continuum.

Notable Attacks/Techniques

  • Hold back: Captain Atom almost always holds back for various reasons. It can be his mental state, his emotional state, or some other inner conflict he is going through. In addition, he fears his dark side taking over and getting the better of him. Therefore, his power varies greatly and rarely ever go all out. In Captain Atom Vol.2 54 - 57 he stopped holding back momentarily, which led to him creating and destroying a universe over and over again with but a mere thought. As Monarch, he had no such mental weakness and always fought at his full strength.
  • Talk first: Captain Atom is a man with a lot of trauma, and often, he would rather talk than go all out and fight someone. He is a kind man and is willing to hear them out first rather than hurt them - when possible, of course. And even if he attacks, he rarely ever attack first. As Monarch, he likes to emotionally hurt his opponents and hold the higher ground intellectually before unleashing his power against them.
  • Energy over matter: Captain Atom's primary method of attack is energy manipulation. He has more control over its output compared to his other destructive abilities. Even when battling in melee combat, he prefers to employ energy in any way he can.
  • BFR: As Monarch, sometimes he would simply remove his enemies from the battlefield rather than waste time on them.
  • Quantum Field: By manipulating the Quantum Field, Captain Atom is able to control time, space, energy, and matter at will. His energy absorption is potent enough to overcome foes significantly more powerful than himself, such as Nekron.
  • Big Bang: Captain Atom is also able to control incredible amounts of energy, being able to catalyze another Big Bang if he so wished.

Notes:

  • This file only covers his Post-Crisis incarnation and not the New 52 or the original from Charlton Comics.
  • Captain Atom can perform at various levels of powers since he has complete control over his destructive capabilities. In addition, his emotional and mental state also plays a large role in it. To avoid his potential God Complex or evil self from taking control, he tries to hold back as much as possible and all of his stats tend to go down with him.
    • If possible, please avoid scaling characters from Captain Atom, sans Superboy-Prime. When scaling characters from Captain Atom, please read over the context to understand how Captain Atom was acting and feeling beforehand, as well as afterwards.
    • Some writers tend to ignore the character, continuity, and many powers of Captain Atom, as well as his power levels, so if he fights someone, it does not mean they scale to his Large Star level or higher level, especially since most of them boils down to how out of character Nathaniel is written.
      • And if you do want to scale characters from him, please only scale those who battles him in a prolonged story arcs. One or two page battles are often to be ignored due to how his character is written sometimes.
      • Please avoid scaling Superman from Captain Atom at all times, especially at his higher states. Writers, for example Jeph Loeb, often ignore everything about Captain Atom when in presence of Superman to make the latter seem more powerful, despite their long respective history suggesting otherwise.
  • Monarch Armor slightly augments his powers according to a back-up story,[92] however, the main story arc contradicted the said enhancements.[44] Therefore, the main story takes precedence over a back-up issue, which was written to feel like a handbook.
  • Captain Atom was not empowered when the sliver of Void took residence within him during Captain Atom: Armageddon story arc. The sliver of Void was merely creating a chain reaction inside of him to bring out his destructive power.
