“ | What a fool you are. I'm a god, how can you kill a god? What a grand and intoxicating innocence. How could you be so naive? There is no escape. No recall or intervention can work in this place. Come, lay down your weapons, it is not too late for my mercy. | „ |
~ Dagoth Ur |
Background
Dagoth Ur is the former Lord High Councilor of House Dagoth, the traitor house that was destroyed in the War of the First Council. Dagoth Ur is the immortal enemy of the Tribunal Temple cult. The Temple blames Dagoth Ur and his hosts for all the evils that beset the Dunmer and Morrowind. He was of Lord Nerevar's generation, older than the Tribunal (Almalexia, Sotha Sil, and Vivec), and a mighty sorcerer and enchanted in life.
In the past, upon getting hold of the Kagrenac's Tools, which were used to siphon divine power from the Heart of Lorkhan, Dagoth Ur asked Nerevar for their destruction, which Nerevar decided not to, and instead sought guidance from the Tribunal as to what to do with the tools. Nerevar told Dagoth Ur to take care of the tools for him while he went to see the Tribunal. Upon Nerevar and the Tribunal's return to the Red Mountain, Dagoth Ur was already corrupted by madness and irrationality give by the Heart of Lorkhan. He refused to give them the Tools and proceeded to attack them. Nerevar was gravely wounded in the ensuing battle but ultimately managed to slay his former friend.
However, Dagoth Ur lived on, his spirit ever bound to the Heart of Lorkhan, and trapped outside of Life and Death, and into the Dreamsleeve, from which his Dreams and insane Delusions could give him a physical form in the world of the living.
