I like stuff. I like making it and having it. I like alliteration too. "Molecule Man"! I mean, technically I worked with atoms, but... "Atom Man"? Ugh. No zing. No pizzazz. Even atoms seem big and clunky to me now. I should be... Proton Man. Or Quark Man. Superstring Man. Information Man. Editing and ordering the base information of reality. Owen Reece, the Narrative Man. Heh.

Summary

Owen Reece was a weak, shy boy in Brooklyn, New York who obsessively clung to his mother.[1] He grew into a weak-willed adult, made bitter and lonely by his mother's death, and full of fear and hatred of what he regarded as a deeply unfriendly world. Reece became a lowly laboratory technician working at a nuclear plant owned by the Acme Atomics Corporation. He was disgruntled by his job's long hours and low pay. One day, Reece accidentally activated an experimental particle generator, which bombarded him with an unknown form of radiation. The explosion horribly disfigured his face with scars in the shape of lightning bolts, but it also had a mutagenic effect on Reece, releasing his potential for psionic powers on a cosmic scale. Reece could now control all matter, even down to the molecular level, and all energy, and he now used his immense powers to take out his pent-up frustrations on the world under the moniker of Molecule Man.

While often portrayed as a misunderstood villain, he has also at times acted as an anti-hero. Owen is a good man deep down, simply wanting to be better,[2] to be happier, have a fulfilling life, and be recognised for what he has achieved but the world around him was not so kind to him. Always thrown aside, misunderstood, and his own mental and emotional issues has led him to become a terrifying villain at times. However, on more than one occasion, Owen Reece not only saved the universe, but the entirety of Marvel Comics multiverse from omnipotent cosmic villains from the beyond.

Due to his mental and emotional state, his allegiance changes often. Sometimes a good man,[3] other times a terrifying supervillain to be feared by every known entity across the cosmos.

He originally gained his extraordinary abilities by mutation through exposure to radiation from an experimental particle generator. Later this origin was changed into that this opened a "pinhole"[4] into the realm of the Beyonder. Later still to that it irradiated him with the energies that infuse a Cosmic Cube. And his most recent origin is that he was created by the Beyonders as a bomb to destroy all universes.

Powers and Abilities:

Matter Manipulation and Transmutation (His main power is the ability[5] to manipulate[6] molecules,[7] which make[8] up everything[9] - all of creation.[10] Every power and ability he has is due to his ability to manipulate and control molecules of the universe. Thanks to his ability to manipulate the building block of creation, he can do virtually anything and has managed to become one of the most powerful entities in existence. Can manipulate matter on a Sub-Quantic level. Moved the Baxter Building from one place to another.[5] Changed the shape of the house. Turned a woman into an almost lifeless doll.[11] Transmuted Ben into glass. Disintegrated Reed's weapon into helium.[12] Transformed a building into a monster that attacked its surroundings.[6] Transmuted metal into flowers.[13] Absorbed the energy of molecules, stopping its movement. Every molecule is a weapon he can control and use. Did this to Avengers.[9] Attacked Captain America with cartoony stars. Can fix the things he had disintegrated.[14] Encased an entire city in a glass and[10] flew it across the stars.[15] Can convert energy to matter and vice versa.[15] Freed Marsha from the molecular control of the Byeonder.[16] When the Beyonder left the planet unstable - its molecules and and atoms were drifting away from it and were displaced - Owen was keeping it all together with his power. Can create oxygen. With Surfer's help, repaired this dying world by bringing its molecules back to the right place.[17] Rearranged some molecules in Norman's brain. Brought back petrified people and deconstructed things, and potentially people.[18] Seemingly holding a "universe"[19] in the palm of his hands.[20] Created an ark in the Void.[21]), Organic Manipulation (Can affect organic matter too,[15] Created food out of thin air.[7] Did this to the Maker[22] and split his being across the infinite multiverse[23]), Reality Warping (Can control every facet of existence, which includes reality. Caused reality to tremble.[24] Created a quasi-reality. And can edit reality.[25] As a Cosmic Cube being in post-retcon era, he has all abilities of a Cosmic Cube. The primary ability of a Cosmic Cube is reality warping. Scaling above the Sentry and Vector), Quantum Manipulation (See here[24]), Space-Time Manipulation ( When the Beyonder destroyed a large chunk of the multiverse, Owen repaired it within moments.[4] Created a hole in the multiverse to the Beyonder's realm.[4] Caused a trans-multiversal quake[24]), Time Manipulation (Reversed time.[26] Held a single tachyon particle in one space[24]), Void Manipulation (Created a hole in the multiverse to the Beyonder's realm.[4] Planned to go to the Beyonders Realm and create himself a safe haven.[4] When the Beyonder exploded, trying to erase all of existence, the Molecule Man threw all of those energies into his realm through a hole he created[3]), Time Travel (Astral projected with the Beyonder and looked at his life on Earth so far.[4] Travelled to the Void before and after time.[21] Travelled through time with Doom[27]), Antimatter Manipulation (As explained here[24]), Higher-Dimensional Manipulation (Was affecting higher and lower dimensions. Turned 2D beings to 3D beings.[24]), Superhuman Physical Characteristics (Can amplify himself to become a superhuman), Energy Manipulation (Can convert energy to matter and vice versa.[15] Used himself as a conduit and poured Norrin's energies into himself, and after interlinking his energies with Surfer's, he used that to repair the world instead of using his own energies.[17]), Energy Projection (Can project[11] energy[6] from the Wand and his hands[28] and body.[24]), Power Nullification (Was depowering the Beyonder.[3] (His son was able to depower both Man-Thing and the Thing.[8] Nullified God Doom's powers[22]), Creation (Can create[5] virtually[11] anything[6] out[9] of thin[29] air[27]), Forcefield Creation (Can create[5] powerful[6] forcefields[9] which can[30] stop attacks[18] from Invisible Woman, Impossible Man, Thor, Silver Surfer, Iron Man, and more.), Absorption (Can absorb molecules of anything. Absorbed the energy of molecules.[9] Was going to absorb the world.[14] Absorbed leftover energies of the multiverse.[4] Killed[31] and absorbed the Beyonders[32]), Statistics Amplification and Statistics Reduction (Can increase and decrease his powers), BFR (When the Beyonder exploded, trying to erase all of existence, the Molecule Man threw all of those energies into his realm through a hole he created.[3] BFR's everyone - living people - out of Beyonders death beam and into the sub-space.[17]), Spatial Manipulation (As shown here[33]), Transformation (When he got his powers, his physical form went through a physical change.[5] When he tries to possess someone, they begin to look a bit like him.[12][6]), Possession and Immortality (Type 1, 3, and 4; resurrected himself.[9]. Type 5; transcends Death on a multiversal scale. Type 6; His consciousness resides in the Wand, if someone were to take it, he will take over their body and mind and transform them to[11] look very close to him.[12][6]), Resurrection (Resurrected[8] himself.[9] Stated he can resurrect others countless times over.[34]), Regeneration (Low-Godly; Reconstructed himself from complete[6] physical, and possibly mental destruction.[9] Stated that nothing can ever truly kill him.[18] And returned from this after a while[18]), Pocket Reality Manipulation (Turned a town into a small "world" of his own.[30][18] Created a pocket reality inside of a dome which vanished after he let himself get defeated.[9][14]), Enhanced Senses and Extrasensory Perception (As explained here.[14] Can feel molecules being controlled by someone else.[16]), Cosmic Awareness (Sensed the Watcher watching him from Astral Plane. Knew that the abstracts were planning to attack the Beyonder.[1] Can probe the universe.[35] Kept up with the abstracts' "battle" against the Beyonder.[35] Was watching the fight between the heroes and Beyonders[21]), Clairvoyance (As shown here[4]), Astral Projection (Can astral project.[1] Astral projected with the Beyonder and looked at his life on Earth so far.[4]), Shapeshifting (Changed his scrawny look to his usual one[17]), Intangibility (As explained here[36]), Teleportation (Of himself and others.[30][18] Teleported himself to meet the Beyonder.[1] Teleported himself[28] and Doom to the Void[21]), Portal Creation (Created a doorway to space in his bedroom[35]), Fusion Negation (Broke up the Venom symbiote from his host[30]), Perception Manipulation and Illusion Creation (Shown here[30]), Status Effect Inducement (Did this to Ares.[30]), Telekinesis (Can restrain people with an invisible force. Moved newspapers.[5] Moved a mountain across the planet and dropped it on the Avengers.[37]), Ice Manipulation (As[5] shown here), Air Manipulation (Via matter manipulation.[5]), Density Manipulation (Tried to strangle Iron Man.[14]), Magnetism Manipulation (Via creating magnets[5]), Earth Manipulation (Can control[5] the content[9] of the very[14] planet itself.[10] Can use it to shield himself from attacks if needed.[15] Did this to Mount Rushmore.[34] Was keeping the entire Battleworld together[38]), Electricity Manipulation (As[5] shown here), Weather Manipulation (As explained here[39]), Metal Manipulation (Restrained the Thing. Bent metal.[5] And as shown[11] here.[6] When Iron Man tried to take the Wand, his armor began to change shape slightly.[11] Restrained the Human Torch.[6] Restrained Tigra and the[9] Avengers. Created a metal fortress from scrapyard. Smacked Tigra away. Created a tsunami-like torrent of metal to stop the Avengers.[14] Encased a villain in metal.[40]), Sealing (Sealed Manhattan in a glass.[5] Sealed the F4 in an Adamantium prison.[6]), Dimensional Travel (His son, who got the exact same powers in the exact same way could teleport and travel from another space-time to the main one.[8] Travelled to the Beyonder's dimension.[4] Created a doorway for Galactus in the Superflow[25]), Biological Manipulation (If not for his mental limits, he should have no problem with affecting biology of individuals, like his "son" did.[8][Note/Explanation 1] His consciousness resides in the Wand, if someone were to touch it, he will take over their body and transform them to[11] look very close to him.[12][6] Implied he could permanently transform Sue Storm into something else.[12] Messed with the lungs of some people and blinded a Watcher.[24] Threatened to pull the genetic code of Norman out of his body.[30] Did this to Daken. Then turned him into water.[30] Turned Doom into a being of light[27]), Life Manipulation (Made a statue cry. When Kosmos lost her soul and life, he returned her to the land of the living[24]), Power Bestowal (His son gave Ben his powers back.[8] Whoever takes possession of his Wand, they gain his powers - but also risk losing[11] themselves to him.[12][6] Gave the wand powers because he liked magicians.[9] Moments before he was forced to turn into the Cosmic Cube, he gave a bit of her power to his girlfriend so if he return without power, he will not be left powerless.[36]), Power Absorption (Moments before he was forced to turn into the Cosmic Cube, he gave a bit of her power to his girlfriend so if he return without power, he will not be left powerless[36]), Water Manipulation (As[11] shown [12] here[6] and here.[13] Created a couple of gallons of water to scare away the heroes.[14]), Petrification (As[11] shown[29] here[30]), Cloth Manipulation (Changed her clothes.[11] Changed Reed's costume.[12] Changed his own clothes.[14] Changed her clothes[36]), Light Manipulation (Generated light.[30] Turned Doom into a being of light[27]), Attack Reflection (As shown here[30]), Aura (An example of which is shown here[18]), Flight (Can fly under his own power.[15] But can also fly using other objects.[13] Explanation about how his flight works.[34]), Explosion Manipulation (Caused a large explosion.[37] Exploded the Sentry from inside-out[29]), Durability Negation (Via matter manipulation. For example; Exploded the Sentry from inside-out.[29] And did so again.[18]) Causality Manipulation (Can reverse cause and effect. An example of which is shown here.[26] Split the Maker's being across the infinite multiverse[23]), Summoning (Summoned the Beyonder from Oblivion[24]), Stealth Mastery (He is well hidden from all forms of scans and couldn't be found by others until Doom started looking for a specific frequency[28]), Deconstruction (Was going to turn the F4 into cosmic dust if not for their uniforms, which stopped the Molecule Man from affecting them.[6] Disintegrated Reed's weapon into helium.[12] Disintegrated Cap's shield and Surfer's board.[9] Disintegrated Tony's device.[14] Deconstructed a car.[29] Deconstructed the Sentry.[30] Deconstructed her clothes[18]), Law Manipulation (Said his power is to defy all scientific laws. And controls everything in his world.[30] Was destroying universal laws of the countless planes of existence in his fight against the Beyonder[24]), Accelerated Development (As explained here.[24] He could share information, knowledge and experience with his other selves in the multiverse.), Death Manipulation and Conceptual Manipulation (Type 1; scaling to the Beyonder. Tried to "kill" a flower when the Beyonder destroyed the concept of Death.[1] Interacted with Superflow and created a doorway in it, which is a conceptual plane.[25]), Existence Erasure (Scaling to the Beyonder. In addition to, he said he can obliterate someone and send them to Oblivion. By verse standard, only those who gets erased from existence can enter Oblivion.[34]), Healing (Up to High-Godly; can seemingly bring back people he erases into Oblivion. Only when something is erased from existence on various levels can they end up in Oblivion[34]), and should be able to replicate the abilities of both the Sentry and Vector due to having superior Molecule Manipulation ability than them.

Almost all from before, but the potency of it has reduced to multiversal levels only. In this form, he lacks Immortality type 5 and 6, and resistance to Death and Conceptual Manipulation. In addition to, he got; Transformation (can now transform between[24] his two personalities.[34] Transformed into fire and back into Molecule Man and then into Owen[34]) and Multiple Personalities (There are two beings inside[24] his mind now; Owen and Molecule Man[34]).

All before and returned to its original potency, except for Multiple Personalities. In addition to, he has now retained his transcendence over Death and concepts back, as well as Immortality Type 5, and likely Type 6 too. His new abilities includes; Multilocation and Acausality (Type 1 and 3; Is a singular entity across the infinite multiverse. Was separated into infinite selves to sustain the multiverse.[27]), Precognition (Saw the coming of the Beyonders in a "dream"[20]), and Duplication (Broke himself up into infinite pieces[22])

Note: these are his abilities which he has shown at his absolute peak. All previous which has been enhanced to levels beyond comprehension, except for Multiple Personalities, plus, Beyond-Dimensional Existence and Large Size (11; transcends the Eight Multiverse in its entirety), Information Manipulation and Plot Manipulation (As stated here.[25] And created a TV screen in his own domain to watch a story he specifically made for Galactus so he would understand what he needs to do in order to win[25]), Nonduality (Type 2; transcends conceptual beings such as Master Order and Lord Chaos[25]), and possibly Breaking the Fourth Wall (For a being who exists on this level, it is possible for him to be familiar with the House of Ideas and the One Above All[25])

Attack Potency: Varies (His power levels varies heavily depending on his mental and emotional state, as well as the mental blocks[7] he places upon his own mind[30] - without even knowing) from Human level (Is an ordinary human sometimes, but his statistics tend to go up and down) to High Ascendent level (On the first day when he gained his power, he was considered a threat to universes by the Watcher.[5] Narration referred to him as the most powerful being after the Beyonder.[16][Note/Explanation 2] The Watcher considered him and his power beyond that of the Eternity, Death, and The Living Tribunal. And was the only one who could save the entirety of Marvel Multiverse from the Beyonder. Respected by the Abstract Entities of Marvel.[1] When the Beyonder destroyed a large chunk of the multiverse, Owen repaired it within moments. While he was getting weaker due to his emotional and mental state, he could still harm a not-so-serious Beyonder a bit.[4] Destroyed a barrier of the Beyonder. And matched the Beyonder in power - even though Owen was scared and emotionally scarred.[3]) | Varies up to High Ascendent level ( Is the other half of Cosmic Cube, and comparable to Cosmic Cube Beyonder.[26] Later proved to be stronger than the Cosmic Cube Beyonder; their battle produced a trans-Multiversal quake across various levels of reality.[24] Considered himself more infinite than whatever Victor could achieve. Considered one of the most powerful beings in the universe by the narrator.[41] Considered neo-omnipotent by the Living Tribunal. According to Kubik, he holds unimaginable powers even for a being like him.[24]), potentially far higher (His power grows over time. Kubik noted that his potential is far greater than any other Cosmic Cube being[24]) | Varies up to High Ascendent level (According to Doom, none can stand against him with Molecule Man by his side.[19] Despite his power and self being separated into infinite selves, he still has enough power upon his death to destroy a universal Eternity.[27] Killed[31] and absorbed the entire race of Beyonders.[32] Three of them were previously capable of destroying The Living Tribunal.[42]) | High Ascendent level (Far superior to his former selves. Is the source of God Doom's power.[38] Created the Eight Multiverse,[22] a mega structure that covers everything until the Far Shores. Even when separated into infinite pieces, he can end the likes of Lifebringer Galactus with a mere thought. Lifebringer Galactus is capable of battling and harming entities who can kill The Living Tribunal. He transcends the Eighth Multiverse, seeing this enormous structure as if it is a small box, likely views it as fiction[25])

Speed: Varies from Average Human to Irrelevant (Comparable to Pre-Retcon Beyonder) | Varies up to Irrelevant (Comparable to Cosmic Cube Beyonder, who should be comparable to other Cosmic Cubes. Cosmic Cube allows its users to superior to time and space[43]) | Varies up to Irrelevant | Irrelevant

Lifting Strength: Varies from Athletic Human (Likely greater than the Invisible Woman) to Irrelevant (Comparable to Pre-Retcon Beyonder) | Varies up to Irrelevant | Varies up to Irrelevant (Comparable to the Beyonders, who are superior to The Living Tribunal) | Irrelevant

Durability:Varies (His power levels varies heavily depending on his mental and emotional state. He was able to survive a hit from Sue Storm[12] and the Impossible Man.[12] At one point, when he took over and transformed a snake, it was able to withstand an attack from Iron Man.[11]) from Human level (Is an ordinary human sometimes, but his statistics tend to go up and down often) to High Ascendent level (Comparable to the Beyonder. And matched the Beyonder in power - even though Owen was scared and emotionally scarred.[3] While both were weakened, Owen far more than the Beyonder, he was still able to shield the heroes from a powerful attack of the Beyonder.[3]) | Varies up to High Ascendent level, potentially higher, (Fought Cosmic Cube Beyonder[24]) | Varies up to High Ascendent level | High Ascendent level

Stamina: Varies up to Infinite. Like his other stats, this also varies. He has infinite power, unlimited energies, and can absorb more if he ever needed it. However, depending on his mental and emotional state, that could go down to even average human level. | Unknown. | Same as his Original self. | Greater than before

Range: Varies up to High Ascendental (Restored a large chunk of the Marvel multiverse when the Beyonder destroyed it. Travelled to the Beyonder's realm - outside of the multiverse.[4]) | Varies up to High Ascendental | Varies up to High Ascendental | High Ascendental

Standard Equipment: Power Wand. In the beginning, the only way for him to use his powers efficiently was with the help of the Wand - however, he did not need it. He just created the wand because he liked the idea of it.[9] | None notable. | None notable. | None notable.

Intelligence:

At least Above Average. He was an electric engineer in a lab when the accident occurred.[5] Basic understanding of how molecules, bonds, and chemicals work are needed for his abilities to work properly. However, his intelligence varies quite often depending on his mood. In addition to, in the beginning he could not figure out how create food as he found its molecular structure hard.[14] In the same arc, he found Iron Man's tech too complicated.[14]

In terms of battle intelligence, he has been able to give the likes of Fantastic Four and Avengers a lot of trouble. He is able to use his Molecular Manipulation in variety of ways to save himself from the heroes. Like turning his forcefield to a spring, then parachute when fighting human torch. When he was fighting the Invisible Woman (then called Invisible Girl), he couldn't see her, so he covered her in newspapers to make it easier for him to attack her. The first time he appeared, to get rid of Reed, he created two magnets that pulled him away in separate direction and force him to stretch to his limits.[5] Understood how the Silver Surfer utilises his powers and attacks his enemies, so he removed his one winning condition as soon as he could and defeated him.[9] Was able to figure out how best to save people from Beyonder's death beam. At a weakened state, instead of covering each and everyone with a forcefield, he instead BFR'd everyone into sub-space to make everyone think the Beyonder had succeeded, likely the Beyonder himself too. To escape from Avengers and the government, he came up with a simple yet effective plan to escape. He instructed his girlfriend to use her heat based power to power up the balloon and run away.[17]

In terms of cosmic understanding, his intellect is almost unparalleled. He knows more about the cosmos than almost anyone else. He was the only one who could truly comprehend the plot of the Ivory Kings. A small part of it was perhaps due to his connection to them, but most of it seems to have come from his own experience and how he gathered intelligence from his other selves across the multiverse, and his own thinking. In addition, he was the only one who knew how to draw the Ivory Kings into the locations he wanted them to be in. Knew about the library of the Beyonders. When he instructed Doom on how to save the multiverse by killing him and thwarting the plans of the Beyonders, it took them 10 years to take notice of this, and even longer to understand what was going on.[27] Thanks to his cosmic awareness, he can draw upon any knowledge from across every corner of the multiverse.

Weaknesses: His powers depends on his mental and emotional state, and as such, he becomes weaker if his[4] mental[3] and emotional state wavers. Like we saw in Secret Wars II, the more he felt paranoid, the weaker he became - which can be seen with his feats. And when his girlfriend left him, saying all those terrible things to him, his emotional instability skyrocketed and he had a lot of trouble against the Beyonder whereas before that, he was performing much better against him. If not for his mental and emotionally instability, he would have not lost so much power when fighting against the Beyonder and nearly dying.[17] Cannot affect unstable molecules.[6] The effects of his[11] powers wanes when he leaves the place - it is heavily implied that he does so subconsciously to return things to the way they are. Due to his terrible childhood, he is a lonely person at heart and yearns for people to be close to - in need of a friend, a lover,[44] a parental figure sometimes, etc. This led to various battles of his ending in his defeat. For example, he let the Avengers win in his encounter with them because Tigra spoke some sense into him.[14] For a short while, he was not fond of his powers so tried not to use it.[1] | Same as before plus less control over his powers. And now has multiple personalities disorder, so Owen and Molecule Man are in a bit of a battle. In addition to, can no longer affect organic matter. Cannot affect something which has no molecules.[45] | Same as his classic self. In addition to, he is mentally damaged because every time a Molecule man in the multiverse dies, his mind is hurt[27] and loses a bit of himself.[32] | None notable.

Notes:

  • Original Molecule Man was retconned Fantastic Four Vol 1 318, and he became a Cosmic Cube being. Post-Retcon Molecule Man seemingly vanished after Incredible Hulk Vol 1 442, and replaced with a more modern one that is a little similar to his original one. The modern one can also be found in Hickman's run, however, he was retconned once again. Since his appearances prior to Hickman does not give us much information regarding his origin, for this profile, we are assuming modern incarnation follows Hickman's origin of his as the Beyonders' Bomb.
  • Every variation of him has a varied mechanism as his power levels depends heavily on his mental and emotional state. And as such, he becomes much weaker if his mental and emotional state wavers. The more confident he is, the stronger he is. However, when he loses confident or is feeling down, his powers drastically changes.
    • All of his stats changes with his mind. His strength, speed, durability, potency of his matter capabilities, energy capabilities, and more.
  • It should be noted that in his battle against the Beyonder he was not feeling very confident, especially after seeing his girlfriend say those terrible things to him - almost forcing him to commit suicide. While he was determined to save the world, his emotional and mental state did not allow him to win or put up a greater fight against the Beyonder. In addition to, he wanted the heroes to throw the final blow and "defeat" the now weakened Beyonder.[4][3]
  • In his first appearances, he could not affect organic[5] matter.[8] However, this is due to the limits of his own mind.[10] He thought he could not affect them, so he did not even attempt to affect them. In addition to, those blocks existed because he feared his own powers.[10]
  • It should be noted that Griever at the End of All Things only killed a universal piece of Owen, and not his true self, which far transcends that of the Eight Multiverse.[33]
