Summary
Truths are an ability used in Umineko no Naku Koro ni. They are rules introduced in a game board for the battle between witches and humans. There are multiple kinds of truth that each have a different function depending on how they are used and who can use them.
- Red Truth - The Red Truth is an undeniable fact that must be followed, even without any evidence or proof to support it. However there can be multiple interpretations of the Red Truth. Attempting to speak false or contradictory information via the Red Truth causes the user to choke up. This can only be used by the witches or inquisitors.
- Blue Truth - The Blue Truth is used to present a possibility to counter the logic of the witch's side, though it can be used against humans as well. These statements are generally assumed to be true unless countered by a Red or Gold Truth. The Blue Truth usually takes the form of a theory to counter the opponent and requires the Red Truth to be countered. Can be used by both humans and witches.
- Purple Truth - A new Truth introduced by Bernkastel for her game. This Truth has power comparable to the Red Truth in that all words spoken in this color are deemed automatically true without any evidence or proof to support it. However, unlike the Red Truth there is a special caveat in that the killer is capable of lying in it.
- Golden Truth - A mysterious truth that can only be used if one truly understands the nature of the game board. It is woven in such a way that it can either be weaker or stronger than the Red Truth. Ange Ushiromiya explains it as a Truth constructed by belief that is acknowledged by multiple people. Which means it can even protect against the Red Truth. It can be used by any character who understands the gameboard.
Tier
Truths are used for erasing others to the Depths of Oblivion, which encompasses both the Witch Domain and the Third Domain. This means the potency of Truths is equivalent to High Ascendent level.
Uses
The following abilities are gained via the usage of Truths.
- Conceptual Manipulation (Type 3): Truths can be used to destroy the concept of an opponent, as they deal damage on a conceptual level. This can also extend to other ideas as well, such as being able to destroy a passageway that was the concept of hidden doors , and thus destroying all hidden doors on the gameboard.
- Existence Erasure: Truths can be used to deny an opponent's existence on a conceptual level. This completely erases them from existence and can send them to the Depths of Oblivion.
- Reality Warping: Depending on who's truth wins in the catbox, truths can bend reality to accommodate what they say.
- Regeneration Negation (High-Godly): Truths are capable of denying someone's existence on a level that beings with High-Godly regeneration such as Erika have trouble recovering from and require outside help to try regenerating.
- Resistance Negation: Truths are capable of destroying the the concept of resisting, evading, or persisting against such attacks
- Power Nullification: Truths are capable of cancelling out other truths, as they are the only way to counter them. Willard also used a truth to destroy a conceptual red barrier, as well as Battler using blue truths to destroy the Eiserne Jungfrau's barriers.
- Causality Manipulation: Dlanor used a Red Truth to deny the existence of a drug or machine to ever exist for eternity.
- Plot Manipulation and Text Manipulation: Truths are literally the text of the visual novel weaponized.
- Law Manipulation: Beatrice used the Red Truth to create laws, such as using it to prevent magic from existing in the Golden Land
- Weapon Creation: Truths are purely conceptual and the shapes are also conceptual, which means they can take on whatever form they wish, such as a gun, sword, or stakes.
- Sealing: Truths can be used to seal off hidden exit paths and doors, preventing any form of escape.
- Paralysis Inducement: Upon being attacked with a Blue or Red truth, the opponent's movements will be significantly staggered, paralyzing them.
- Empathic Manipulation: The Blue Key is able to create self-doubt in an opponent making them deny themselves.
- Disease Manipulation: The effects of the Truths have been described as a "third-degree conceptual denial syndrome" that would need a witch as powerful as Bernkastel to recover from.
- Poison Manipulation: Truths also have effects of a concept-denying toxin running through a victim's body.
