Explanations
Because of several rights acquisitions, the Valiant Comics canon is divided into several continuities. The following is an explanation of various canons:
- Valiant Comics (1991 - 1996) - The original continuity, owned by Voyager Communications. Despite its acquisition by Acclaim Entertainment in 1994, Valiant Comics publications continued up until 1996.
- Acclaim Comics (1996 - 2004) - A complete reboot of most Valiant Comics publications following their acquisition by Acclaim Entertainment, a videogame publisher looking to use their new line of comics as the basis and promotion for a line of videogames. Acclaim Entertainment declared bankruptcy in 2004 following a series of controversies and the failure of several games to meet sales expectations. While all Valiant Comics titles were cancelled, the new stories continued to take place in the same universe as the original.
- Acclaim Entertainment (1996-2002) - published a number of videogames based on the Acclaim Comics universe. The Turok series, in particular, was a huge success, receiving six instalments despite some deviations from the main videogame continuity. Turok would receive a reboot and remaster even after Acclaim's bankruptcy. Two Shadow Man games were also released, the first of which became a cult classic among Nintendo 64 players and was recently remastered. An Armorines videogame and a crossover between X-O Manowar and Marvel Comics' Iron Man were also released to mixed reviews. Some of these videogames were preceded or advertised in other ways by short tie-in comic book series or one-shots.
- Valiant Entertainment (2012–present) – In 2005, Dinesh Shamdasani and Jason Kothari founded Valiant Entertainment after acquiring the rights to most of Valiant's cast and completely rebooting it. DMG Entertainment has owned Valiant Entertainment since 2018. There are some alternate versions of the main VE universe, such as Valiant High, which is based on a high school.
- Valiant Entertainment has also released (non-canonical) content in other forms of media, such as the 2016 live-action web series Ninjak Vs. The Valiant Universe and the 2020 Bloodshot film.
