Summary

Yu-Gi-Oh! (遊☆戯☆王, Yuu☆Gi☆Ou, lit. "King of Games") is an anime and manga franchise from Kazuki Takahashi that mainly involves characters who play a card game called Duel Monsters wherein each player purchases and assembles a Deck of Monster, Spell, and Trap Cards in order to defeat one another and gain victory.

It began as a manga in 1996, the Yu-Gi-Oh! franchise has since grown to an immensely successful global brand, spawning various manga and anime series, a real-life version of the card game featured in the story, video games, toys, and many other products.

Canon

Yu-Gi-Oh! can simply be divided by the people involved in said content, with multiples splits being created from that. Thus, a simple branching of the canons would look like this:

  • NAS Canon: The main canon, made of all the anime series produced by NAS and animated by Studio Gallop. It's make up of the anime series Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters, Yu-Gi-Oh! GX, Yu-Gi-Oh! 5Ds, Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL, Yu-Gi-Oh! ARC-V and Yu-Gi-Oh! VRAINS, the movies Yu-Gi-Oh! Pyramid of Light and Yu-Gi-Oh! Bonds Beyond Time, alongside the spin-off Yu-Gi-Oh! Capsule Monsters. Takes the Official Card Game and Trading Card Game as its basis.
  • Manga Canon: The original canon, made of all the original manga created by Takahashi, and all other further material supervised by him. It's make up of the manga series Yu-Gi-Oh!, Yu-Gi-Oh! GX, Yu-Gi-Oh! 5Ds, Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL and Yu-Gi-Oh! ARC-V, alongside the movie Yu-Gi-Oh! The Dark Side of Dimensions. Takes the OCG/TCG as its basis.
  • Bridge Canon: The new mainstream canon, make up of all anime made by Studio Bridge, new company to own the Yu-Gi-Oh! rights after NAS. It's make up of Yu-Gi-Oh! SEVENS, Yu-Gi-Oh! Rush Duels and it's still in production. Unlike the NAS canon before it, it doesn't take the OCG/TCG as its basis, instead being based around Konami's other format, Rush Duels.
  • R Canon: Made up of material written by Akira Itou. It's make up of only Yu-Gi-Oh! R, but it also takes the Yu-Gi-Oh! manga as canon despite the manga not considering it canon. Takes the OCG/TCG as its basis.
  • Chibi Canon: Made up of material written by Akihiro Tomonaga, recogized by its chibi art style. It's make up of Yu-Gi-Oh! D Team ZEXAL and Yu-Gi-Oh! ARC-V The Strongest Duelist Yuya!!. Takes the OCG/TCG as its basis.
  • Toei Canon: Made up of all material owned by Toei, the first company to adapt the Yu-Gi-Oh! manga. It's make up of Yu-Gi-Oh! Yami no Game (nicknamed by fans as Season 0) and Yu-Gi-Oh! The Movie. The only canon to not consider the formats made by Konami as its basis (either the OCG/TCG or Rush Duels), instead using an earlier version of the OCG made by Bandai.
